Mike Nichols was born in Berlin, Germany in 1931 and his real birth name is Michael Igor Peschkowsky. When he was 7 years old, he and his family moved to live to the United States. In 1944, he got his American citizenship. Mike Nichols was a student at Manhattan, where he attended elementary school. Later, he was accepted to Walden High School. He also was a student at New York University, but soon quitted attending it because he wanted to get involved into cinema industry. In 1950 Mike Nichols was also studying at the University of Chicago, where he was accepted to the pre-med program. However, he soon found himself skipping classes in order to attend theatrical performances.
It was also around this time when he made friends with Elaine May. Soon they started working together in comedy and became nicknamed as “the world’s fastest humans”. After that, Mike Nichols was taught Method acting by Lee Strasberg. Mike Nichols soon came back to Chicago, where he became a member of the Compass Players, where he was joined by Elaine May, Byrne Piven, Paul Sills and some others.
