Kirk Franklin was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1970. When he was a baby, his mother abandoned him and he grew up in a care of his great aunt. When he was 4 years old, Kirk Franklin started to attend piano lessons. In fact, to pay for these lessons, his great aunt would collect and resell aluminum cans.
Kirk Franklin soon started to write music and read sheets. Kirk Franklin also joined a local choir and when he was 12 years old he became a music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church. In 1992 he created a choir known as “The Family”, where seventeen people were singing. This choir included mainly his friends. Because the choir became so successful, it landed the record deal and the band became known as “Kirk Franklin & The Family”.
