Funkmaster Flex was born in 1967 in the Bronx, New York City and his full birth name is Aston Taylor Jr. His father Aston George Taylor Sr. was also a well known man in the music world, as he also worked as a DJ and was a sound system professional. When he was 16 years old, Funkmaster Flex got a job as a DJ in various local night clubs. When he was 19 years old, he got his first job at a radio station which was WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM in New York. After he left his work there, Funkmaster Flex got hired by 107.5 WBLS-FM.
In the beginning of the 90s, Funkmaster Flex appeared as a DJ in many night clubs managed by Vito Bruno. In 1992, Funkmaster Flex got his own show on the radio, which aired on Hot 97. This station became the first pop music station in New York which also aired rap music programs.
