Funkmaster Flex was born in 1967 in the Bronx, New York City and his full birth name is Aston Taylor Jr. His father Aston George Taylor Sr. was also a well known man in the music world, as he also worked as a DJ and was a sound system professional. When he was 16 years old, Funkmaster Flex got a job as a DJ in various local night clubs. When he was 19 years old, he got his first job at a radio station which was WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM in New York. After he left his work there, Funkmaster Flex got hired by 107.5 WBLS-FM.
In the beginning of the 90s, Funkmaster Flex appeared as a DJ in many night clubs managed by Vito Bruno. In 1992, Funkmaster Flex got his own show on the radio, which aired on Hot 97.
